|DRIFTING MEMORIES, ink and natural pigments, 12" x 36" $400|
Entering the studio, my sole intention is to explore. With ink, pigments or acrylic on Japanese, watercolour or “rock” paper, using Cedar bark brushes, squeegees, old rough brushes, hoping for moving results, though knowing how elusive they could be.
Entering the studio to explore mindlessly in bold gestural brush strokes, pausing to assess, as objectively as possible, volume, movement, texture, light, composition. More ink might be added or acrylic “squeegeed”, areas flooded, ash, clay or sand sprinkled, metallic leaves layered, mindfully taking risks, often ending up having gone too far but keeping exploring until a fully satisfying whole is achieved...or not, which is also part of the process.
Each exploration is an exciting new adventure. The urgency to explore –with brush as well as with clay- proceeds from a joyful complicity with the medium and is fed by the curiosity of what will come out of this collaboration, AT THIS POINT AND PLACE IN TIME.
